BRUNEAU (Alfred) (1857–1934). French composer and conductor. A friend and collaborator of Émile Zola, he was one of the leading figures of musical naturalism. His notable compositions include *Le Rêve*, *L'Attaque du moulin*, and *Messidor*. Autograph letter signed “Alfred Bruneau” to “My dear friend” [Émile Zola]. Villa Lucie, in Bénerville, near Deauville (Calvados), May 9 [circa 1890]. 2 pages, in-8 format. Mourning paper. A fine letter concerning the Society of Dramatic Authors and Bruneau’s relationship with Émile Zola. Bruneau announces his admission as a member of the Society of Dramatic Authors, expressing his high regard for his correspondent and their artistic collaboration. “I have just been admitted as a member of the Society of Dramatic Authors, and I took the liberty of choosing you as my sponsor, along with Zola. Thank you for once again joining hands with me.” He also mentions the difficulties he encountered in obtaining copies of the second act of their play, as administrative red tape is delaying the copying of the manuscript. “The initial hassles prevented me from copying the second act of our play. I will do so immediately and will send you your manuscript in two or three days at the latest. ” He concludes by mentioning his move to the seaside, where he hopes to find the peace and quiet necessary for his work. An interesting letter for the history of the literary and musical relationships of Bruneau and his circle. A few creases and slight signs of age. In good overall condition.
