BOSTSARRON (A.) — CORTOT (Alfred) — DEBUSSY (Claude). Signed letter regarding the reproduction of an autograph manuscript by Claude Debussy held in Alfred Cortot’s collection. Paris, November 10, 1956. 1 page, quarto size, typewritten, on letterhead of Éditions de la Grange-Batelière, 7 Rue Daunou, Paris. Autograph signature in black ink by A. Bostsarron, general secretary of the publishing house. An interesting document concerning the collection of musical manuscripts belonging to the famous pianist Alfred Cortot and the preparation of a book dedicated to Claude Debussy. Addressed to Paul Hooreman in Lausanne, this letter acknowledges receipt of a photograph of an autograph letter by Claude Debussy belonging to Alfred Cortot: “You were kind enough to include, as an attachment to your letter of November 8, a photograph of a letter by Debussy that belongs to Mr. Alfred Cortot.” Bostsarron specifies that this photograph is intended for Éditions René Kister in Geneva as part of a publishing project: “In fact, this photograph is intended for Éditions René Kister, 33 Quai Wilson in Geneva, on whose behalf I had written to Mr. Alfred Cortot, who is currently in France. ” This letter directly complements the one sent two days earlier, on November 8, 1956, by Paul Hooreman to Éditions de la Grange-Batelière, in which he announced the mailing of the photographic reproduction of Debussy’s manuscript. These exchanges document the circulation and editorial use of the musical autographs preserved by Alfred Cortot in the mid-20th century. In generally good condition, with a central crease, some wrinkles, and signs of handling.
