BERNIER (Louis-Stanislas) (1845–1919). French architect, winner of the Prix de Rome in 1872, architect of the Paris Observatory and the Opéra-Comique. Autograph letter signed “Louis Bernier” to “Sir and dear colleague.” Paris, September 20, 1912. 1½ pages, in-8 format, on blue paper with a printed letterhead reading “144, boulevard Haussmann (8th arrondissement).” Bernier responds to his correspondent regarding Mr. Moussard’s candidacy for the position of administrator in Chantilly. He states that he has reviewed the letter concerning this candidacy and specifies that it will be examined by the relevant committee: “I was not aware of this candidacy, which will be reviewed along with the others—already numerous—at the committee’s next meeting.” He adds that he will inform his colleagues of the candidate’s qualifications and notes that the committee is not expected to meet until early October. An interesting letter concerning the administration of the Chantilly estate, illustrating the role of architects and committee members in the management of heritage institutions in the early 20th century. Written in blue ink, with a handwritten signature. Original creases, in good condition.
