BARNOLT (Pierre-Auguste Fleuret, known as) (1839–1900). French tenor. Signed autograph letter to a correspondent. The duet from *Mireille* and an unpublished piece by Massenet. Paris, undated [circa 1887]. 1 page, in-16 format, in brown ink, on paper adorned with an elegant blue monogram featuring his initials. Signed “Barnolt.” An interesting letter in which the tenor Pierre-Auguste Fleuret, known as Barnolt, discusses preparations for a concert and the selection of works to be performed. “At the concert on May 6, I will sing an unpublished duet, a parody of the duet from *Mireille* with Madame José Moya. Mlle. Jeanne Dupin, a student of Marmontel, will play a short piano piece that will make quite an impression. She will also accompany us in the duet. ” In a postscript, he specifies his correspondent’s address: “19 Avenue Notre-Dame de Lorette.” Pierre-Auguste Fleuret, known as Barnolt (1839–1900), was a French tenor particularly prized for his character roles. He spent much of his career at the Opéra-Comique, where he notably took part in the premiere of Ambroise Thomas’s *Mignon* in 1866. He was still a member of the company at the time of the tragic fire at the Salle Favart on May 25, 1887. This letter is of interest to the history of Parisian musical life in the late 19th century. It documents the preparations for a concert featuring several artists and refers to *Mireille*, the famous opera by Charles Gounod, as well as to Jeanne Dupin, a student of the pianist and teacher Antoine-François Marmontel. An interesting account of Parisian concerts and collaborations among artists at the Opéra-Comique in the late 19th century. In good overall condition. A few slight creases, small old marks, and a perforation in the upper margin. The handwriting is well-preserved and the signature is legible.
