Paris, July 3, 1942. 6 folio-sized pages and an additional sheet of annotations. An interesting working document pertaining to the singing competition at the National Conservatory of Music and Dramatic Art, held on July 3, 1942. It lists the male and female candidates, the works performed, their previous awards, and the competition results. Numerous handwritten pencil annotations, scattered throughout the margins and columns, comment on the vocal performances, physical and artistic qualities, as well as the awards under consideration. Notable comments include: “Beautiful voice, always a bit veiled.” “Brilliant, beautiful voice; sings well.” “Unflattering appearance. Music, unfortunately, a bit too loud.” Several candidates are marked with crosses, boxes, or comments, while summary lists set out the proposed rankings. An interesting document for the history of French music education during the Occupation and for the study of Conservatory auditions. A few creases, signs of handling, and small marginal tears.
