The battle took place between the British Royal Navy's North Sea Fleet (led by Admiral Adam Duncan), and a Batavian Navy fleet (led by Vice Admiral Jan Willem de Winter). Duncan's fleet achieved a decisive victory over de Winter's in the most significant conflict between British and Batavian forces during the French Revolutionary Wars, seizing eleven ships while suffering no losses themselves.1 References: 1D.
