149 - Thomas Walter Wilson R.I. R.O.I. (British, 1851-1912) Henley Royal Regatta signed 'Walter Wilson RI' (lower right) oil on canvas Unframed: 51.5 x 90.5 cm. (20 1/4 x 35 5/8 in.) Framed: 69.5 x 108 cm. (27 3/8 x 42 1/2 in.) With M. Newman Ltd, London; Private Collection, U.K. Thomas Walter Wilson was well known for his drawings and illustrations, which appeared regularly in The Graphic and The Illustrated London News, but enjoyed wider recognition for his landscapes and genre scenes. During the 1870s he exhibited at the Society of British Artists and the Institute of Painters in Water Colours, of which he was elected a member in 1879. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy. The present scene shows Henley Royal Regatta during the Edwardian period, possibly capturing the Grand Challenge Cup race (a crew of eight) in the distance; the oldest race duing the event. Walter Wilson appears to have been interested in high society events and also painted 'The Lawn at Goodwood' in 1886 (location unknown).
