Attributed to François d'Orléans, Prince of Joinville (French, 1818-1900) Bataille de Samsa (Maroc) le 11 Mars 1860 watercolour, heightened with white and traces of pencil Unframed: 53 x 67.5 cm. (20 7/8 x 26 1/2 in.) Framed: 63.5 x 78.4 cm. (25 x 30 7/8 in.) Private Collection, U.K. The mount is inscribed as follows: “Au moment du coucher du soleil les kabyles sont chassis de leurs dernieres positions par le regiment de Navarre, les Chasseurs de Chiclana et quelques officiers de l’Etat major general.” (At sunset, the Kabyles were driven from their last positions by the Navarre Regiment, the Chasseurs de Chiclana, and a few officers from the General Staff.) The inscription also suggests identification of the main subjects: M. Becker Officier Russe; Colonel Don Magenis; Don Mariano Lacy, Colonel de Regt de Navarre; Colonel Don Felipede Solis (Nolis?) ; S A A le Conte D'Eu and Capitaine Don Arsenio Pomba. The depiction of the Count D’eu in the present example, who wears a white uniform and rides a white horse, bears a striking resemblance to that on a “carte de visite” published by Franck from an original drawing by the Prince de Joinville 1818-1900 (the Count’s uncle), currently held by the Royal Collection Trust (RCIN 616232). This print also depicts the Count on the battlefield during the Hispano-Moroccan War (1859–60). Typical of his watercolours are the cartoonish expressions of the figures who are often portrayed with bright white eyes and single black dots as the pupils. Here the artist also employs these white highlights to depict gun smoke that hovers around the figures.
