94 - Attributed to Jules Dupré (French, 1811-1889) Forest glade oil on panel Unframed: 31.2 x 22.9 cm. (12 1/4 x 9 in.) Framed: 45.7 x 37.5 cm. (18 x 14 3/4 in.) With Beaux Arts Gallery, London. Property from a Distinguished U.K. Private Collection Dupré began his career as a decorator at his father’s porcelain factory before turning to landscape painting in the 1830s. Following a visit to England in 1832, he encountered the work of British masters such as John Constable, J. M. W. Turner, and Richard Parkes Bonington, whose influence would shape his artistic practice. Although associated with the Barbizon School, Dupré preferred to work independently in l'Îsle-Adam, north of Paris. This view likely depicts the surrounding forest, a subject he returned to frequently, capturing trees silhouetted against richly coloured, intensely atmospheric skies, see for example Dupré's 'The Old Oak' at The Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, (no. 37.61).
