Georges Putzys (late 19th Century) Paphiopedilum rothschildianum signed 'Georges Putzys' (lower right) watercolour Unframed: 46.5 x 28.5 cm. (18 1/4 x 11 1/4 in.) Framed: 63 x 44.5 cm. (24 3/4 x 17 1/2 in.) Private Collection, U.K. Georges Putzys provided the original watercolours for at least 84 plates which were published in Jean Jules Linden’s monumental 'Lindenia:iconographie des Orchidées' between 1897 and 1900. "Lindenia" remains perhaps the most celebrated catalogue of finely illustrated orchids from the height of the tropical orchid craze which swept Britain, Europe and North America in the 19th century. The orchid depicted here - also known as the Gold of Kinabalu or Rothschild’s slipper orchid was one of the most sought after orchids at the height of the 19th century orchid mania. The precise details of its location were kept a trade secret for decades and it was only in 1959 that two populations were rediscovered. In the wild it only occurs on Mt. Kinabalu on the island of Borneo where it remains critically endangered.
