George Romney (British, 1734-1802) Two standing figures brown ink and brush on paper Unframed: 29.5 x 16.3 cm. (11 5/8 x 6 3/8 in.) Framed: 45.5 x 31 cm. (17 7/8 x 12 1/4 in.) Private Collection, London. The positioning and expression of the figures in this study could suggest that the present work is a preparatory sketch for Romney's Two Sisters Contemplating on Mortality (location unknown), painted between 1766-1767. While many sketches for the work are known, Robert Dunkarton’s engraving of 1770 provides the best evidence for its final appearance.
