56 - After Justus Sustermans (Flemish, 1597-1681) Portrait of Eleonora Gonzaga (1598-1655) oil on copper Unframed: 7.2 x 5.7 cm. (3 3/4 x 2 1/4 in.) Framed: 10.8 x 8 cm. (4 1/4 x 3 1/4 in.) With Galerie Claude Vittet, Paris; The H. George and Marianne Mandel Collection, USA; Private Collection, London. The portrait is held in an oval form with cast, chased, and pierced decoration of interlaced scrolls, flanked by two winged female busts, all surmounted by a mask. Loop attachment, marked with the import (weevil) small guarantee mark for silver (minimum 800 standard), post-1838. Born into the House of Gonzaga as a princess of Mantua, Eleonora Gonzaga (1598-1655) ultimately became the Holy Roman Empress, as well as Queen of Germany, Hungary, and Bohemia, through her marriage to Emperor Ferdinand II. Justus Sustermans depicted Eleonora Gonzaga on several occasions in both full-length and bust-length portraits. It can be suggested that the present work is after the original full-length work by Sustermans, executed 1623/1624, currently held by the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, and on view at Schloss Ambras Innsbruck. Comparison can also be made between this example, and Sustermans bust-length portrait of Eleonora c. 1623/24, now in Palazzo Pitti (Galleria Palatina), Florence (no. 0900745801).
