38 - Attributed to Pieter Neefs I (Flemish, c.1578-1656/61) Animated church interior (Intérieur d'église animé) signed 'N E F S' (centre right) oil on panel Unframed: 33.5 x 49.4 cm. (13 x 19 1/2 in.) Framed: 48 x 64 cm. (18 7/8 x 25 in.) Private Collection, London. The present work is published on the RKD as a work by Pieter Neefs (I) (R.K.D. neg. nr: 02.775-10x24). Neeffs was admitted to the guild of Antwerp in 1609. Specialising in Church interiors, particularly Antwerp Cathedral, Neefs explored and studied the plays of light within complex architectural spaces. He created many versions of such interiors, capturing a juxtaposition between light and dark; as seen in the present example where day light shines through the windows and candles glow, contrasting with the much darker areas. His works are often difficult to distinguish from those of his son, Peeter Neeffs the Younger (bapt. 1620 - after 1675). It is thought however, that Neeffs the Elder extenuates the depth of space by contrasting the foreground in brown and background in grey pigments, which is less pronounced in the work of his son.1 References: 1 Bénézit, E.
