37 - Follower of Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (Dutch, 1606-1669) Study of a lion brown ink Unframed: 8 x 12 cm. (3 1/8 x 4 3/4 in.) This drawing of a lion in profile recalls those executed by Rembrandt throughout his career. In 1722, the inventory of the Dutch collector Jan Pietersz Zomer recorded a total of nineteen drawings of lions by Rembrandt, though only six autograph examples are known to survive today.1 Lions were a subject of intense fascination for Rembrandt, who likely drew some of these animals from life after their importation into the Netherlands from Africa and their exhibition at public fairs. Rembrandt’s extant drawings tend to display a heightened attention to the heads and upper bodies of the lions while depicting the lower portions in a looser manner.2 The present work, which presents the full body of the animal in confident stride, was likely produced by a later artist engaged in the broader language of Rembrandt’s draughtsmanship. Our artist was far from alone in their admiration of Rembrandt’s lions; the popular drawings were reproduced as engravings and published in Bernard Picart’s Recueil de Lions in 1729.3 References: 1P. Schatborn, “Young Lion Resting” (2017). In The Leiden Collection Catalogue, 3rd ed. Edited by Arthur K. Wheelock Jr. and Lara Yeager-Crasselt (New York, 2020–23), p. 3. https://www.theleidencollection.com/archive/ (archived December 2023) 2The surviving drawings are in the British Museum (Inv. Oo,9.71; Inv. Oo,9.75), the Rijksmuseum (Inv. RP-T-1901-A-4524), the Musèe du Louvre (Inv. RF4721), the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen (Inv. R 12), and Sotheby’s, New York, 'Master Works on Paper from Five Centuries', 4 February 2025, Lot 201 3P. Schatborn, p. 3
