29 - Albrecht Dürer (German, 1471-1528) The Holy Family with Three Hares, c.1580 woodcut with watermark 'The Name of Jesus (4SH in a Shield)' (Meder 306), Meder state F Unframed: 42.5 x 31.5 cm. (16 3/4 x 12 3/8 in.) (sheet), 28.5 x 39.5 cm. (11 x 15 1/8 in.) (plate) Private Collection, U.K. The watermark visible in the sheet (Meder 306: "The Name of Jesus (4SH in a Shield)."), dates the paper to c. 1580.1 The three hares in the present composition are particularly interesting because they add a playful, natural element to the otherwise devotional scene, highlighting Dürer's skill for detailed observations of animals. Seated in the Hortus conclusus from the Latin Vulgate translation of the Song of Songs (4:12), which says, 'A garden enclosed is my sister, my spouse; a garden enclosed, a fountain sealed up'. The woodblock for this print, c. 1497-98, is now in the Princeton University Art Museum (Inv. no. x1967-11). This is a very rare survival; only five woodblocks from Dürer's large, single-sheet woodcuts are known to exist: two in the British Museum, two in the Met, and one at Princeton. 2 References: 1Joseph Meder, Dürer-Katalog: ein Handbuch über Albrecht Dürers Stiche, Radierungen, Holzschnitte, deren Zustände, Ausgaben und Wasserzeichen (1932), p. 318, no. 306, tab.
