26 - After Jacopo da Ponte Bassano (19th Century) Lamentation by candlelight oil on canvas Unframed: 49.5 x 61.7 cm. (19 1/2 x 24 5/16 in.) Framed: 62 x 74.3 cm. (24 3/8 x 29 1/4 in.) The composition of this painting is based on The Deposition of Christ by Jacopo Bassano, who repeated the scene on several occasions. Bassano produced these works on canvas (Musée du Louvre, inv. no. 433) and on slate (Sotheby's, New York, 29 January 2021, lot 145), evidently catering to individual patron preferences. Jacopo's eldest son, Francesco, also executed numerous variants of this composition (Sotheby's, New York, 22 May 2025, lot 146).
