After Paolo Veronese (Italian, 1528-1588) Christ and the Centurion oil on canvas Unframed: 76 x 58 cm. (29 7/8 x 22 7/8 in.) Framed: 91 x 73 cm. (35 3/4 x 28 3/4 in.) Private Collection, U.K. This painting is a loose copy after Veronese's Christ and the Centurion of 1571, now in the Museo del Prado, Madrid (inv. No. P000492). It can be assumed that this painting is more specifically observing a German 18th century engraving after Veronese's Madrid painting, by Phillipe Andreas Kilian (from 'Index Historiam Veteris et Novitestamenti Picturarum Chalcographicarum', 1758). For example, our painting features the second man to Christ's proper left that appears in the engraving but not in Veronese's painting in Madrid. Our painting also copies the armour and fabrics of the engraving rather than those of the Madrid painting. The vertical format of our painting follows that of the engraving, thus omitting the two marble columns and additional soldiers found at the far right of Veronese's horizontal composition. The only observable differences between our painting and the engraving are the painting's lack of two figures on the balcony in the top right, and the absence of the floor decorations below the foreground figures.
