Follower of Jan Josefsz. van Goyen (Dutch, 1596-1656) A view of the city of Leiden oil on canvas Unframed: 97.3 x 141 cm. (38.3 x 55.5 in.) Framed: 113 x 163 cm. (44 1/2 x 64 1/8 in.) Sale; Sotheby's, London, 11 July 2002, lot 164; Private Collection, U.K. A prolific and highly influential painter, etcher, and draughtsman, Jan Josefsz. van Goyen (1596-1656) spearheaded the development of naturalistic landscape painting in seventeenth-century Holland. His oeuvre encapsulates the prosperity and adventurous spirit of the Dutch Golden Age, ranging from bustling village scenes to expansive seascapes replete with merchant vessels. Van Goyen frequently produced panoramic views of Dutch cities, including several of his native city of Leiden. The present painting, here attributed to a follower of van Goyen, depicts the master's hometown with the Hooglandse Kerk on the right portion of the horizon. Autograph examples of van Goyen's Leiden cityscapes can be found in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich, c. 1643 (Inv. no. 4892) and the Museum De Lakenhal, Leiden, c. 1650 (Inv. no. S115).
