Sulawesi, Toraja, a wooden door; As a symbol of power, fertility, and wealth, the water buffalo is omnipresent in Toraja culture. Not only is the kerbau the guardian of the dead, but the animal is also considered the vehicle that carries the dead to the afterlife. On this antique piece, the stylized head with an upward extension—which some interpret as representing the Tree of Life—depicts a male figure with outstretched arms and legs positioned within the inner circle formed by the horns, symbolizing both death and fertility in this very image. By rendering the figure in outlines, its spiritual nature appears to be accentuated. H. 90 cm. Provenance: Loed van Bussel, Amsterdam, mid-1980s. Inventory number in white ink on the back: F38. The Aldo and Hannie van Eyck Collection. [1]
