Guinea, Baga, a dance headdress, zigiren wonde, with a metal bell on a braided animal-leather cord, with a blackish-brown patina. Pigment remains, sheet metal, female bust with prominent breasts, rising from a board-shaped base with forked projections. With a handwritten collection number “14GA” on the back, repaired (breakage on the left foot), cracks, traces of abrasion; “zigiren wonde” means “the young bride” and represents a married woman who has given birth to children. Thus her breasts are long, though rarely flat. She is a cultured woman, with scarification patterns around her neck and breasts and often rings around her neck. H. 82 cm. Provenance: Emil Storrer, Zurich, Switzerland
