Punic Limestone Stele, ca. 300–50 BCE The carved relief on this Punic limestone stele reflects distinct religious and artistic traditions of ancient Carthage. The central engraving features a prominent triangle surmounted by a horizontal bar and a circle. This is the canonical “Sign of Tanit,” a stylized geometric symbol representing Carthage’s chief goddess, Tanit. It is widely interpreted by scholars as an anthropomorphic representation of the goddess with her arms outstretched in blessing, protection, or prayer. To the right of the “Sign of Tanit,” the emblem of the raised right hand is positioned. To the left of the sign, the caduceus has a tree-like shaft incised less deeply and with only a single line, spreading at the base. In the upper part of the stele, a crescent moon is depicted, symbolizing the heavens and highlighting Tanit’s role as a powerful lunar deity. The stele is shaped like a pillar, with a triangular top. Height: approx. 35 cm. [1]
