Collection of five Roman terracotta oil lamps, 1st–5th century CE. A collection of five Roman oil lamps made of terracotta. Two of the lamps are smaller in size. The first has a floral motif on the discus. This oil lamp bears a clear inscription on the bottom: “MNOVIVS.” The second is decorated with incised lines arranged on the shoulders, and the same decoration in a more irregular pattern on the discus. The third lamp, slightly larger, has a discus depicting a composition of elongated oval shapes around the center of the oil lamp. The remaining two lamps are the largest in size and depict figural scenes. One discus shows a human figure surrounded by lions. The shoulders feature vegetal decorations. The other oil lamp shows two male figures, possibly in a boat, one of whom appears to be attacked by an animal. The scene may represent a narrative or mythological episode. This oil lamp bears a clear inscription on the bottom: “LMADIBC.” (L. 9.8–12.6 cm) Provenance: Private Dutch collection, acquired between 1970 and 1974 by a collector working for the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stationed in North Africa.
