Two Roman terra sigillata oil lamps, with corresponding upper mold halves. A 3rd–5th-century CE pair of Roman mold-made oil lamps, each with an upper mold half. The molds represent the upper portions of the lamp, including the discus, shoulders, and handle. The first lamp depicts a Chi-Rho motif on the discus. The shoulders are decorated with a repeating pattern of small triangular or spade-shaped motifs. The lamp is slightly fire-blackened due to chemical processes during production. The corresponding mold is partially broken at the end of the handle. The second lamp features a palm motif on the discus. The shoulders are decorated with a combination of floral and geometric motifs. The pairing of a lamp with its mold shows both the finished product and the tool used in its manufacture. L. 15.5–18.7 (molds) Provenance: Private Dutch collection, collected between 1970 and 1974 by a collector working for the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stationed in North Africa. [2]
