French work, late 19th-early 20th century. White cotton tablecloth, embroidered with multiple fleurs-de-lis and in the center the mirror-image initials G and I which, combined with the fleur-de-lis motif, suggest the initials of Gaston and Isabelle d'Orléans-Bragance, Count and Countess of Eu. Isabelle de Bragance (1846-1921), the eldest daughter of Emperor Pedro II of Brazil, married a grandson of King Louis-Philippe I, Prince Gaston d'Orléans Comte d'Eu, in 1864, founding the "Princes d'Orléans-Bragance" branch. The couple had four children. In her father's absence, Princess Isabelle of Brazil was regent of Brazil on three occasions, in 1872, 1877 and 1888. It was during this last regency that the daughter of Emperor Pedro II of Brazil signed the abolition of slavery, earning her the title Isabel a Redentora (Isabella the Redeemer).
