This portrait photograph of the “Persona Performance,” presented at the 1977 Cologne International Art Market, shows Valie Export with her face “blacked out”: “A drama within the continuum of disruption in an intersexual relationship between two people. Based on the symbolism of the shoulders and hands as historical body language, the story of the woman in the man’s world is disrupted.” - The photograph, retouched below the white “collar,” served as the template for the invitation card to Valie Export’s performance “I (beat (it))” and the subsequent exhibition at the Studio Galerie Mike Steiner in April and May 1978. - Apart from the retouching, only minimal scratch marks. - Provenance: Estate of Mike Steiner, Berlin.
