Romanov Dynasty—Tsar Alexander II of Russia, with his youngest son, Pavel Alexandrovich (full-length, seated). Saint Petersburg, (after?) Ippolyte Charles Gabriel Robillard, (ca. 1862?). Vintage. Albumen print, mounted on cardboard. Dimensions: approx. 10 x 6 cm. Cardboard dimensions: approx. 9.5 x 6 cm. It is known that Robillard, a photographer and artist of French origin (1804/06–1888), subsequently corrected noticeable motion blur in his photographs through montage and retouching. This print shows virtually no visible traces of such corrections. Pavel Aleksandrovich Romanov was shot as a hostage in 1919 at the St. Petersburg Peter and Paul Fortress on the orders of the Extraordinary Military Commission after an attempt to exchange him for Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht failed. - The cardboard is irregularly trimmed in width; the photograph has a small pressure mark on the surface above the center of the image; on the reverse, there is a later annotation in lead (Cyrillic). - Provenance: Formerly owned by Grand Duchess Maria Aleksandrovna (1853–1920), the younger daughter of Alexander II of Russia from his first marriage, Duchess of Edinburgh and Saxe-Coburg and Gotha; private collection in Switzerland; private collection in southern Germany.
