Romanov Dynasty—Portrait of a grand ducal child in a winter mink coat, likely Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich (carte de visite, full-length, standing). Saint Petersburg, Shpakovsky Studio, (1859–1863). Vintage. Albumen print, talbotype (?), mounted on cardboard. Dimensions: 8.5 x 5.5 cm. Cardboard dimensions: 9.5 x 6 cm. The reverse side of the cardboard features a printed copyright design: the studio’s mark (in Latin) on a bordered field with anti-copying grid lines. The accomplished photographer A. Shpavovsky (1823–1881) worked with various techniques and, as an inventor, conducted scientific research on light effects; he is considered one of the pioneers of Russian photography. - The reproduction has small black dots in the upper section and a small printing mark on the surface in the upper background; the cardboard is slightly irregularly trimmed, but otherwise in good condition. - Provenance: Formerly owned by Grand Duchess Maria Aleksandrovna (1853–1920), the younger daughter of Alexander II of Russia from his first marriage, Duchess of Edinburgh and Saxe-Coburg and Gotha; private collection in Switzerland; private collection in southern Germany.
