Romanov Dynasty - Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich (cabinet card, half-length portrait). Moscow, Daniil Asikritov Studio, (1906–1911). Vintage. Albumen print, mounted on cardboard. Size: 13.5 x 9.5 cm. Cardboard dimensions: 14 x 10 cm. The cardboard features a graphically designed, lithographed advertisement by the studio promoting a series of four Romanov portraits (including this photograph of the Grand Duke). D. Asikritov was one of the most famous court photographers of the Romanovs; his services were utilized by Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich and Grand Duchess Mariya Alexandrovna, among others. The Grand Duke died in 1905 in an “infernal machine” assassination attempt by the Social Revolutionaries, who held him responsible for the catastrophe at Hodynka Field. The print was therefore made shortly after his death. — The cardboard has slight brown spots; a few brown spots show through onto the photograph; a brief later annotation in lead on the reverse; otherwise well preserved. - Provenance: Formerly owned by Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna (1853–1920), the younger daughter of Alexander II of Russia from his first marriage, Duchess of Edinburgh and Saxe-Coburg and Gotha; private collection in Switzerland; private collection in southern Germany.
