Plüschow, Wilhelm. Pompeii. 3 albumen prints. Vintage prints. Each bears the photographer’s stamp “GUGLIEMO PLÜSCHOW NAPOLI” (in violet) on the reverse, as well as the collector’s stamp of “Theodor Her” and the handwritten numbers “471,” “475,” and “476” (in blue). Circa 1890. Sheet dimensions: 16 x 12 cm each. One photograph was taken in front of the “Tempio di Apollo,” another likely in the “Casa Cornelius Rufus,” and the third also in the atrium of a house. All depict boys dressed in togas in the classical style. — “Arcadian scenes featuring handsome young men and beautiful girls were Guglielmo Plüschow’s photographic passion.” (Peter Weiermair in the foreword to: Guglielmo Plüschow, Erotic Photographs, Cologne, Taschen, 1993). — The photographs, formerly mounted, show slight printing marks in the corners, are minimally creased, and the collector’s stamp on the reverse shows through in the upper left corners. - Provenance: Probably acquired in 1890 during a trip to Italy by the painter Theodor Her (1838–1892), who also devoted himself to nude photography of male models; in his family’s possession ever since; from the estate of Hans von Hoermann.
