Oppenheim, Dennis. Decomposed Room with Object (gypsum, steel, pulverized iron). Color photograph on Agfa paper, mounted on a typographically printed sheet of glassine. Vintage. Signed and numbered on the reverse in ballpoint pen. Copy: 1/60. Circa 1968. Photograph: 8.8 x 12.7 cm. Sheet dimensions: 29.3 x 21 cm. A view, likely taken around 1968, of a “Decomposition” installation by the American land and body art artist Dennis Oppenheim (1938–2011). In 1968, Oppenheim presented an installation for the first time at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York as part of the “Annual Exhibition: Contemporary American Sculpture," an installation that broke down the building—designed by Marcel Breuer and Hamilton P. Smith and completed two years earlier—into its basic components: “gypsum steel” and “pulverized iron.” - Very rare! - The printed backing paper is slightly browned and creased; the photograph mounted on the reverse along the upper edge of the sheet is in very good condition.
