Man Ray. Henry Miller and Margaret Neiman. Gelatin silver print. Vintage. Back stamped "A60." 1942. Sheet dimensions: 12 x 8.5 cm. The original negative is held at the Centre Pompidou, inventory number AM 1994-393 (6717). — An enlarged, signed print is in the collection of the Getty Museum (84.XM.1000.133). - Although Man Ray and Henry Miller lived in Paris at the same time, they did not meet until after their return to the United States. Like Man Ray, Miller moved to Los Angeles in 1940, where he stayed with Margaret Neiman and her husband Gilbert, who introduced Man Ray and Miller to one another. - With her upper body bare, the masked Margaret Neiman appears behind the writer, whose everyday outfit—a shirt, suspenders, and tie—forms an almost humorous contrast to his lively muse. - Some creases and wear; a stain near the left breast; a short, continuous cut in the upper right corner near the distorted background; corners slightly bumped; slightly stained on the reverse. #
