Homosexuality - LGBTQ - Manen, Hans van. Strapped - Thys. Gelatin silver print on thin cardboard. Vintage. Signed, titled, dated, and numbered on the reverse with a black fiber-tip pen. 1984. Copy: 3/10. Image dimensions: 37 x 37 cm. Sheet dimensions: 42 x 39 cm. A captivating close-up of the Dutch dancer and choreographer Hans van Manen (1932–2025), who is internationally regarded as one of the great innovators and most significant choreographers of contemporary ballet. In the 1980s and 1990s, the “Mondrian of dance” developed—parallel to his career as a choreographer—a small, carefully composed body of photographic work comprising portraits of dancers and male nude models. Van Manen’s inspiration and mentor was Robert Mapplethorpe, whom he knew personally. - In December 2024, a year before his death, van Manen donated his photographic oeuvre to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam: “Hans van Manen’s powerful photographs bear witness to his vision as a choreographer. The unique tone of his work makes it an important part of Dutch photography of the 1980s.” (Taco Dibbits, Director of the Rijksmuseum). - Edges slightly bumped, otherwise in very good condition.
