Unknown. 14 costume designs for soloists and chorus for a performance of the mugham opera "Shah Ismail." Graphite and gouache on paper. Partially illegibly signed. Azerbaijan, 1980s. Various types of paper and sheet sizes: 24.5 x 37 cm to 50 x 22.5 cm. The collection includes costume designs for several main characters (including the male title role), as well as for the entourage of the female title role (Gyul’zar’s friends, court ladies). The mugham opera by composer M. Magomaev was one of the first works of its kind to combine Azerbaijan’s national musical traditions with European high culture. - All pages contain varying numbers of notes by the costume designer and others, in graphite and ink (primarily in Russian notation), and some are numbered multiple times. Some sheets show crease marks and have tears along the margins (rarely larger than approx. 4.5 cm) as well as slight stains; one sheet is somewhat more heavily stained. The reverse side contains some annotations (including cast lists) in ink, additional graphite sketches, or traces of mounting; one sheet there also has color samples. Some of the sheets are bound together with pins.
