Teutsch, Walter. Untitled. (Three Oryx Antelopes). Color woodcut on thin China paper. Signed and dated in pencil in the lower right corner, and numbered and labeled "Handdruck" in the lower left corner. Copy: 31/57. 1958. Image dimensions: 40 x 60.5 cm. Sheet dimensions: 59 x 86 cm. This large-format portrait of the desert antelopes, with their characteristic black spots on their faces and long, straight horns, is by Walther Teutsch (1883–1964). After completing his studies at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, his prints began appearing in *Simplicissimus* and *Jugend* in 1909. In 1939, the Nazis banned him from exhibiting his work and forced him into retirement; after the war, he taught again as a professor at the Munich Academy from 1946 to 1952. His work, characterized by bold colors and often depicting people and animals in nature, is now part of the collections of the MoMA in New York and the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich. - Mounted at three points along the upper edge of the sheet beneath the mat, slightly creased and discolored in the mat cutout.
