Schmitz, Hans. Reclining Figure II. Bronze, with a golden-brown patina. Monogrammed "h. sch." on the sole of the foot at the back. 1924/c. 1972. Dimensions: 8 x 18 x 12 cm. See exhibition catalog, Frechen 1970/71, *Hoerle and His Circle*, no. 207 (art wax, 1930). - The sculptor and graphic artist Hans Schmitz (1896–1977) was a member of the Cologne “Group of Progressive Artists.” A large portion of his work was destroyed in a bombing raid, which is why only a few of his works survive today. - “Schmitz created his sculptures primarily in plaster, clay, or art wax. Whether this was done solely for aesthetic or artistic reasons, or was perhaps also a matter of limited financial resources, can no longer be said with certainty today. (...) In the 1970s, Schmitz had bronze casts made from these (plaster and clay) models for small editions (max. 7 copies) of some of his earlier sculptures” (Cat. Galerie Glöckner, Cologne 2013, p. 3 ff.). These small bronze editions were distributed through Galerie Kunze in Berlin. – Minimally polished.
