Schmidt-Rottluff, Karl. Untitled. (Portrait). Brown chalk lithograph on thin ivory-colored cardboard. Signed, inscribed "Portrait," and dated in pencil, as well as monogrammed in the print. 1908. Image dimensions: 35.5 x 27.5 cm. Sheet dimensions: 45 x 31.5 cm. Schapire L 34. — Possibly a portrait of his mother, Auguste Marie Schmidt (1856–1936), this depiction bears striking similarities in posture, hairstyle, and facial features to the woodcut “My Mother” from the Buchheim Collection (Gerlinger H 04-3), which has been in the possession of the LWL Museum of Art and Culture, Münster, since 2023. Like Schmidt-Rottluff’s “Peasant Woman” (Schapire L 35), which was created around the same time, this extremely rare “Portrait” is also framed by a border line. - The sheet is mounted on a backing in spots along the upper edge on the reverse; it is evenly and lightly browned, with minimal wear on the corners and edges. - Provenance: Walter Bauer Collection, Fulda.
