Rogall, Karl. Unemployed. Oil on plywood panel. Signed and dated lower right; titled on the reverse on an old label. 1933. Panel dimensions: 55.5 x 43 cm. Framed: 75 x 63.5 cm. A sensitive, realistic portrait of a worker by the “painter and pacifist” Karl Rogall (1899–1974), to whom art historian Inga Schubert-Hartmann dedicated a comprehensive monograph in 2023. Rogall was a staunch pacifist and was politically active in Soest on behalf of the KPD. Because of his critical stance and anti-fascist convictions, he was politically persecuted during the Nazi era. Among other things, he drew for the system-critical publication “Die rote Wippe.” - Edges slightly bumped and showing framing marks; the topmost varnished paint layer is slightly dusty and mottled, with minor scuffs.
