Petzoldt, Gustav. Fish and Lemon. Oil on canvas. Monogrammed, dated, and inscribed with the location to the right below the fish; inscribed on the reverse with the artist’s name and the title. Stretcher dimensions: 53 x 67.5 cm. Framed: 57 x 71 cm. A highly decorative still life by the artist Gustav Petzoldt, born in Pilsen in 1880, who moved to Dresden around 1900, studied in Düsseldorf, and enjoyed success both as a painter and as a commercial artist. In the invitation to the memorial exhibition organized by the Saxon Art Association in Dresden upon his death in 1936, Petzoldt is explicitly praised as a “still-life painter”: “In his precise and deceptively faithful depiction of objects, Petzoldt demonstrated an unusual, refined taste—an art of arranging beautiful things and a resonant harmony of colors that delight the eye. Flowers, fruits, glasses, and fabrics blend together beautifully.” - The edges show some superficial scuffing.
