Nolde, Emil. Sailor. Lithograph (based on a brush drawing) on fine Japanese handmade paper. Signed and dated in the lower right corner of the stone. Seebüll Foundation, hand-printed by G. C. F. Dietz, Bremen/Paris. 1910/1960s. Sheet dimensions: 41 x 59 cm. Official handprint published by the Nolde Seebüll Foundation, based on a brush drawing by Nolde created in 1910, printed at the Dietz workshop on the finest Japanese paper. - Mounted on the reverse in the upper corners in a fold-out mat. Schiefler/Mosel/Urban 49. - One of 300 copies of the final version for members of the Cologne Sonderbund, printed in black, lemon yellow, carmine red, and light gray by Westphalen, Flensburg. - One of Nolde’s first true color lithographs from 1913, a year in which he created eleven additional large compositions using this technique. Nolde had only begun drawing on stone around the middle of the year and was experimenting with the various possibilities of this technique, which explains the large number of test prints and color variations. The irregular edges of the lithographic stone, some of which were printed along with the image, should be understood as an aesthetic element of the composition. - Mounted on the reverse in the upper corners in a fabric mat; colors slightly faded; more heavily browned and spotted within the mat cutout; three thumbtack marks on the upper edge; the lower edge of the sheet has a tear approximately 2 cm long and is somewhat creased. - Provenance: Walter Bauer Collection, Fulda.
