Attributed to Kean, Cissie (Elizabeth). Untitled. (Woman with Crossed Legs). Oil on coarse burlap. Monogrammed "EK" in the lower right corner. Circa 1920. Stretcher dimensions: 55 x 46 cm. Framed: 69 x 59.5 cm. The style, color palette, and materials suggest a work from the 1920s by the British artist Elizabeth “Cissie” Kean (1871–1961). - The artist, born in London to a wealthy family of German coffee merchants, studied at the Académie Julian in Paris, traveled extensively (including through France, Italy, and Spain, as well as to Brazil, where one of her brothers lived) and returned to Paris in the 1920s, where she was particularly influenced by the work of André Lhote, Fernand Léger, and Amédée Ozenfant. - The frame, likely contemporary, is hand-inscribed on the reverse with “Salon A. F.” - Partially slightly craquelé, minimal signs of framing, the frame slightly worm-eaten, with a watermark at the bottom.
