Hänel, Georg (attributed). Awaiting the Baptism. Oil on painting board. Handwritten on the reverse on an old piece of paper: "Georg Hänel," and titled on a clipping from an auction catalog. Board dimensions: 34 x 45 cm. Framed: 52 x 63 cm. A rural scene by the Dresden painter Georg Hänel (1879–1945), likely painted in Macedonia toward the end of World War I. - From 1897 to 1906, Hänel studied at the Royal Saxon Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden under Professors Carl Bantzer and Eugen Bracht. Starting in 1907, he undertook study trips to Mecklenburg, Bavaria, Tyrol, Switzerland, and the high mountains of Salzburg. He worked as an independent painter in Dresden beginning in 1908, where he became a member of the Märzbund, founded in 1905. During World War I, he served in the military primarily as a “battle painter” on the Eastern and Western Fronts, in the Balkans, Egypt, and Turkey, before the “painter of the triad” was able to return to his hometown. In 1945, following the Allied bombing raid, he fled with his family to Gammesfeld, where he was fatally wounded by shrapnel. — Pinhole centered below the upper edge, a horizontal cut mark along the upper edge, only a few minor retouches.
