Gerhardinger, Constantin. Untitled. (Seated Female Nude). Oil on canvas. Signed and dated lower right "C. Gerhardinger .V.25." 1925. Stretcher dimensions: 111 x 96 cm. Framed: 117 x 103 cm. Large-format nude by the Munich artist Constantin Gerhardinger (1888–1970), who, together with Thomas Baumgartner and Hiasl Maier-Erding, founded the “Frauenwörther” artists’ group in 1920 and enjoyed great success in the 1920s and 1930s—in part thanks to his sensual style. His career was initially very successful even within the art world of the Nazi regime—he was appointed professor at the Munich Academy in 1939—but he fell out of favor in 1943 because, out of fear of air raids, he refused to continue exhibiting at the Haus der Kunst. Consequently, he was labeled a “defeatist” and barred from practicing his profession. — The stretcher is hand-numbered “68257” on the reverse. - Small hole in the lower left corner; the canvas has obviously been newly stretched; on the reverse, several restorations and a small patch are visible; under UV light, retouching is visible in the corresponding areas, particularly around the head and at two points at the bottom of the sheet; otherwise only isolated tiny areas of paint flaking and the usual framing marks. - Provenance: Hampel, Munich (2002); Ahlden Castle (2006); since then in a private collection in Berlin. - This lot is not suitable for shipping by package. The buyer must arrange for pickup or transport via a freight forwarder.
