Geiger, Rupprecht. Untitled. Neon pink acrylic paint over a portrait photograph by Stefan Moses. Silver gelatin on baryta paper. Signed and dated “Geiger 98” in pencil on the reverse, along with the photographer’s stamp. Sheet dimensions: 31 x 40.5 cm. Rupprecht Geiger (1908–2009) apparently liked the 1986 work “Maskenspiel” by Munich photographer Stefan Moses (1928–2018) so much that he painted over it with his iconic “bright red.” For his series “Artists Make Masks,” the photographer gave the artists he portrayed only five minutes to choose their masks. Rupprecht chose a scraper—an object from his daily work—and also “protected” himself with a “modulation.” For the overpainting, the 78-year-old artist chose areas of the grid and the circular head covering, in addition to his white hair. Likely photographed in the painter’s garden in Solln, a small seed pod remained stuck to the pigmented paint. - Slightly wavy and with faint crease marks; minor damage to the paint layer above the grid; corners slightly bumped.
