Funke, Helene. Untitled. (Meadows and Grove). Gouache on light gray cardboard, with a narrow frame strip of brown-colored paper mounted along the upper edge. On the reverse, written by another hand: “Painting sketch by Miss Helene Funke—Vienna.” Sheet dimensions: 17.5 x 18 cm. Helene Funke (1869–1957) was a German modernist artist. She lived in Paris and southern France between 1905 and 1913. From around 1913, Funke was based in Vienna. There, she was, among other things, a member of the group “Wiener Frauenkunst” (Viennese Women’s Art). In 1928, she was the only woman to receive the Austrian State Prize for her painting “Tobias and the Angel.” Funke was a member of the German Artists’ Association and exhibited in major German cities, as well as in Paris and Vienna, until 1938. During the Nazi era, Funke’s work fell completely out of the spotlight. This did not change until 2007, when a major retrospective of her works was held at the Lentos Art Museum in Linz. — Slightly worn overall, more so at the edges; rarely with minimal, fine spotting; small pinholes at the edges.
