Ernst, Max. Bronze Relief II. Bronze, with a dark patina on the background and a polished raised relief. Engraved signature in the lower right and numbered in the lower left (stamped). Stuttgart, Edition manus presse, 1970. Copy: 9/12. Dimensions: 38.7 x 27 cm. One of 12 copies from a series of 12 bronze reliefs. - “In search of the link between two important poles in Max Ernst’s work—two-dimensional printmaking and three-dimensional sculpture—the (...) bronzes were created, all of which were realized in 1970. The idea for the twelve motifs in an edition of twelve copies came from Max Ernst, who had always been fascinated by the significance of numbers (...) The themes were selected from the print series published by the Stuttgart gallery manus presse, with the motifs undergoing variations and revisions by Max Ernst. In some cases, highly graphic motifs took center stage; however, condensed visual compositions also served as the starting point for the bronzes. (...) Max Ernst designed a signature specifically for the castings, which was applied to all the bronzes. It differs significantly from the signature he usually chose due to the flourish that extends almost back to the beginning of the name.” (Edition manus presse) - Reverse shows traces of a previous mounting. - Provenance: Bukowskis, Stockholm (2012); since then in a private collection in Berlin.
