Busianis, Jorgos. Untitled. (Seated female nude with crossed legs). Oil on canvas. Probably the 1950s. Painting dimensions: 52.5 x 42.5 cm. Framed: 57 x 47 cm. Includes a notarized copy of the expert appraisal by Uta Bauer in Munich, along with a handwritten confirmation of authenticity by Gerhard Busianis, the painter’s grandson. - Busianis (1885–1959) moved to Munich in 1907, where he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts under Otto Seitz. Beginning in 1909, the painter lived in Berlin and studied under Max Liebermann. There, he expanded his repertoire to include naturalistic, impressionistic, and eventually expressionistic elements. A major exhibition of his works in Chemnitz in 1927 attests to the reputation Busianis had built up over the years. In 1934, the artist was forced to return to Athens because his art was classified as “degenerate” under the Nazis. In 1950, Busianis represented Greece with his works at the Venice Biennale. - Professionally restored painting: The canvas has undergone relining and mounting on a new stretcher, with some retouching and missing areas filled with putty (visible under UV light); the painting shows more pronounced craquelure in places, is minimally discolored, and has fine scuffs; the gilded wooden frame is in very good condition.
