Ackermann, Max. Drawing. Black chalk on handmade paper. Signed, titled, and dated on the reverse of the enclosed original backing board. 1938. Sheet dimensions: 31.3 x 27.7 cm. Works created in Hornstaad on Lake Constance by Max Ackermann (1887–1975), who joined the Höri Circle in 1936 and moved to the Untersee after being barred from teaching in Stuttgart. For a short time, Ackermann took over Helmuth Macke’s studio in Hemmenhofen and maintained close contact with Otto Dix, who had “emigrated” to Hemmenhofen that same year. In 1937, as part of the “Degenerate Art” campaign, five of Ackermann’s paintings were verifiably confiscated from the Württemberg State Gallery in Stuttgart and subsequently destroyed. - Mounted on black cardstock at two points on the reverse; only slightly browned. - Provenance: From the estate of the Ackermann family.
