Ackermann, Max. Head in Profile. Graphite on vellum. Signed on the reverse and signed, dated, and titled again on the accompanying original backing board. 1914. Sheet dimensions: 24.8 x 30 cm. Portrait of a young girl applying makeup by Max Ackermann (1887–1975) from his early Stuttgart period. There, in 1912, Ackermann had joined the circle of students around Adolf Hölzel at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, whose theories on abstract painting strongly influenced him. For a long time, Ackermann alternated between figuration and abstraction, between Verism and New Objectivity, between geometric forms and pure fields of color, until he finally settled on an exclusively non-representational visual language in the last years of his life. - On the reverse, traces of a previous mounting remain in the corners; the paper is slightly browned and has minimal staining. - Provenance: From the estate of the Ackermann family.
