Unknown. St. Francis of Paola. Oil on canvas. Probably 19th century. Canvas: 98.5 x 81.5 cm. Framed: 126 x 109.5 cm. Francis of Paola (1416-1507), founder of the Pauline Order (Ordo Minimorium or Minimites), canonized, miracle worker, ascetic, hermit and patron saint of sailors. The coat of arms and motto of his order was "Caritas". Francis of Paola turns to this word in the painting, looking piously and imploringly towards heaven. He holds the shepherd's crook in his arm. The present work is very similar to another painting of the founder of the order, probably created in the 17th century, which is kept in Wadham College at the University of Oxford. It probably comes from the Spanish school. - The canvas relined and repainted, heavy craquelure and a few superficial rubbings, as well as visible retouches, some heavy rubbing and loss of color in the margins, the dark wooden frame partially bumped. - Due to its size, transport must be organized by the buyer.
