ZOLOTAS 'Vergina Sun' silver ring The magic of ancient Greece ! Gorgeous silver ring by the prestigious Greek jewellery house Zolotas, featuring a striking sunburst motif reminiscent of the legendary Vergina Sun. Signed: Zolotas 925 stamp Dimensions approx: 52 cm. (20.46 in.), US: 6 cm. (2.35 in.) Excellent vintage condition (see pictures). A little bit of history The symbol became internationally famous in 1977, when archaeologist Manolis Andronikos discovered royal tombs at Vergina, in northern Greece. A magnificent golden funerary chest (larnax), traditionally attributed to Philip II, was decorated with a spectacular 16-rayed sun. The motif is associated with royal power and ancient Macedonian identity. Interpretations involving light, life, divinity and eternity also exist, although its precise ancient meaning remains debated. The original Vergina Sun typically has 16 rays, although ancient Greek sunburst motifs also appear with 8 or 12 rays.
